Absent Praise

That night I had a dream. In the dream I was an angel for God. You know how in dreams you just know, you don’t know how you know, but you just know who you are and what your purpose is--that’s how it was for me.

So when a deep voice spoke in my head I also instantly knew it was God talking to me and giving me my angelic duties.

“Andrew,” started the voice.

I felt instantly warm just at the mention of my name. He knows my name.

“Yes, God,” I replied with a big smile.

“I want you to take care of someone. He’s very precious to Me. I want you to make sure nothing bad happens to him.”

My charge was a boy who was cast in shadows so I couldn’t make out his features. (But I have dreams all the time with faceless people so it didn’t seem strange.)

I sighed heavily as I sat on the steps in front of God’s throne a month later.

“What’s wrong?” asked God.

“I just don’t get it. There have been so many things You’ve done that were obviously You intervening and he hasn’t said thanks once. How ungrateful is this kid?”

God just smiled, “I don’t think he’s ungrateful. I just don’t think he really understands yet how to recognize My hand working in his life.”

I harrumphed as I rested my cheek on my fist. “I wish someone would teach him then.”

Several years passed and the boy grew up. In that time I could count on my fingers the number of times he’d thanked God for the things He’d done. I was starting to think God was wrong. That it wasn’t that the kid wasn’t noticing His workings but that he was ignoring them on purpose.

“How can he not see all Your providence in his life?” I complained to God...

The warmth of God’s smile washed over me as he gently patted my shoulder. “Someday he’ll look back on his life and he’ll see it all. Then he’ll praise Me.”

“But what if he doesn’t?”

God sighed heavily. “Sometimes they don’t. But I still help them. I love them too much to just sit around and do nothing. Even if they never thank Me.”

“But that’s not right.” I rose as I felt a ball of anger form in my chest. “Who is this punk anyway? I want to give him a piece of my mind.”

God placed his hands on my shoulders and turned me around. Through a window I saw the shadowed face of my charge. I started to tell him off when the shadows started to clear. As the shadows parted I realized I wasn’t seeing the boy through a window but as a reflection in a mirror.

The shadows completely left and I was able to see my own face staring back at me with a stunned expression.

“It’s me?” I asked as my voice shook.

God nodded with a patient smile. “Yes.”

“I was the ungrateful whelp.”

God laughed lightly. “Yes. Yes you were.”

I turned and looked into the eyes of my creator. “God I’m so sorry. I never realized how much You’d done for me...through the years.” My voice broke and my eyes began to sting, “You’ve done so much for me and I’ve barely thanked You for any of it.”

I began to cry as God took me in His arms.

I awoke in tears but I could still feel God’s arms around me as I wrapped my arms around myself. “Thank you God. Thank you for everything.”
